Lidia Fridman (born 20 February 1996) is a Russian operatic soprano. Nominee of International Opera Awards 2021.

Biography

Lidia was born in Samara, Russia. She graduated in 2011 from the School of Arts No. 17 in Singing and Piano.[1] In 2015, she completed her degree at the Vocal Department of the Samara Music College “D. G. Shatalov”.[2] From 2015 to 2018 Lidia attended the Conservatory of Music “J. Tomadini” in Udine. She later studied at Conservatory of Music “Benedetto Marcello” in Venice from 2018 to 2020. During 2018 - 2019, she also completed an internship at the Belcanto Rodolfo Celletti's Academy in Martina Franca, with Fabio Luisi as music director.

Lidia made her theatrical debut as the lead role in the modern production of the opera La Statira by Tomaso Albinoni at La Fenice theater in Venice in 2019. She subsequently performed at the Festival della Valle d'Itria in Martina Franca, where she played the lead role in the opera Ecuba by N. Manfroce in an updated play by Pier Luigi Pizzi;[3] Additionally, she starred in the Donizetti Festival in Bergamo as Sylvia de Linares in the world premiere of the opera L'Ange de Nisida directed by Francesco Micheli.[4]

In 2020, Lidia took on lead roles in the operas Dido and Aeneas by G. Purcell in Padua; Lucrezia Borgia by G. Donizetti at the Müpa Budapest, Verdi Theater in Trieste, and Aalto Theatre in Essen.[5]

Over 2021 – 2022, she played lead roles in the operas Norma at La Monnaie theater in Brussels and Regio Theatre in Turin, Aroldo by G. Verdi at Theatre Galli in Rimini, Don Giovanni by W.A. Mozart in Deutsche Oper Berlin,[6] Il segreto di Susanna by E. Wolf-Ferrari at the Konzerthaus in Berlin, Eugene Onegin by P. Tchaikovsky at the Staatsoper Hannover.[7]

Lidia's repertoire also includes modern music written by composers specifically for her voice: L’ombra della luce by Marco Sinopoli (Biennale Festival in Venice 2019), the opera Cassandra by Marco Podda (Theater Coccia of Novara, 2020), and Epigrammi by Domenico Turi (Verdi Theater in Martina Franca, 2022).

In 2022, by invitation of director Pier Luigi Pizzi, Lidia made her debut as Lady Macbeth (Macbeth G. Verdi) on a tour in Italy.

In 2023, Lidia played the main roles in the world premiere of the opera Dalinda by G. Donizetti at the Konzerthaus Berlin,[8] and opera Salome by R. Strauss at the Immling Festival.[9]

In 2024, she will play the role of Amelia in the opera Un ballo in maschera at Teatro Regio di Torino under direction of Riccardo Muti.[10]

Reviews

Many plays by Fridman received high marks from opera critics in Europe, the UK and the US,[11][12][13][14][15][16] who noted that her voice has a rare dark (metal) timbre, and her performances are distinguished by filigree phrase and emotional acting.[17]
