Mathame

Matteo and Amedeo Giovanelli are Italian brothers known professionally as the DJ and production duo Mathame, artists within the cinematic techno genre.[1][2][3]

Career

Both brothers were trained in classical music, with Amedeo spending five years at a violin conservatory. In addition Matteo studied film and went on to work for years as a film director.[1][2][4] Matteo, the elder of the two, was the first to learn how to DJ, before going on to teach Amedeo how to mix.[1]

The brothers formed Mathame while living in Sicily at the base of the Mt. Etna volcano, helping to run their family's bed and breakfast.[1][2][4] It was the isolation and unique geography of this location which influenced elements of their music.[1][5] Mathame has been described as a combination of electronic music, indie electro, new dance and melodic techno,[4] taking influence from science-fiction, classical movie soundtracks, new technology and anime.[2][4]

Rooted in the cinematic techno genre, Mathame's live Audio Visual (AV) show is a combination of immersive performance and sonic vision. Mathame also utilized AI programming in creating the visuals for their AV show, as well as for other artwork.[2][5] Over a ten-year period Mathame have released music on the following labels including Souvenir Music, Afterlife, and Oddity Records, and are currently on the Astralwerks roster.[6] Mathame tours globally, performing at locations including Coachella, Ultra Miami Resistance, Tomorrowland, Sonus Festival and others.[2][5] Their work has been re-mixed by Diplo, Adriatique, and ZHU.[5]

Memo

Mathame released their debut album, entitled Memo, via Astralwerks on June 30, 2023.[2][4][1] Work on Memo began in 2019[1][3] and continued throughout the COVID-19 pandemic. The thirteen track body of work serves as a travel log of the duo's memories and emotions over a three-year period- leaving their Italian hometown, moving from lockdown, to being able to dance, and being locked down again.[4][1][7]

Influenced by science fiction, other themes within Memo include darkness and light, love, synthesis, and contrast.[1][3] The four layers in each track are intended to be imagined as a character in a story, with the narrative within the tracklist order paying homage to Hero's Journey, a body of work by Joseph Campbell on the concept of the monomyth.[4]

Mathame also utilized AI in their album artwork. Although they were unable to use it for the LP's visuals, due to UMG rules, it was used for the artwork of the following singles: Come for You, To Hope and the artwork and music video for So What.
