Matthew Alford

Matthew Alford is a British author.

Career

In 2008, Alford was awarded a doctorate in Film Studies by the University of Bath, which he later adapted as his first book Reel Power: Hollywood Cinema and American Supremacy with Pluto Press.

That same year, Alford started investigating the disappearance of screenwriter Gary Devore, co-authoring cover articles about it for The Guardian Arts supplement and then Fortean Times.[1] In 2014, he produced The Writer with No Hands about the disappearance, which premiered at Hot Docs. Production disagreements led to the film being withdrawn and a new version issued in 2017 with Alford listed only as presenter. Alford's eponymous book had him abandon the research and claim to be an entertainer.[2][3]

In 2017, Alford co-authored National Security Cinema: The Shocking New Evidence of Government Control in Hollywood. Like Reel Power, it was picked up by French publishers for expanded editions. The book was partially the basis for Theaters of War, a 2022 documentary Alford co-produced.[4]

In 2023, Alford spoke in favour of Julian Assange at TEDx and the Universal Periodic Review of Human Rights at the UN.[5]

He has written for The Guardian,[6] Independent,[7] Grayzone,[8] and Whatculture.[9]
