Background information

Pre-debut: SM Rookies, NCT Universe: Lastart, and pre-debut tour

In January 2016, SM founder and producer Lee Soo-man announced plans for a new boy group NCT with different units to be based in cities around the world.[4] On June 20, 2019, SM's A&R Producer, Chris Lee, announced in a presentation that NCT would continue to debut international units, mentioning that SM was in the process of creating a Japanese unit. This was re-iterated in an interview with Billboard the following day, where it was stated that the unit's activities would be managed between Avex Trax and SM Japan.[1]

On December 1, 2022, it was confirmed that the company was planning a Japanese subunit based in Tokyo, following the opening of their Southeast Asian branch.[5][6] As part of SM Entertainment's producing strategy for 2023, the company revealed that their next NCT subunit, given the tentative name of "NCT Tokyo", would be debuting in the third quarter of 2023.[7][8] On February 24, SM Entertainment announced that NCT Tokyo would be debuting as the group's final subunit.[9][10][11]

On May 23, 2023, SM released an update on the group, announcing that two future SM Rookies would be part of the lineup, with the rest of the group being put together on a pre-debut survival show to expand NCT's Japanese lineup.[12] On June 28, the rookies were revealed as Yushi and Sion.[13] On June 30, SM confirmed the final unit would have its lineup finalized on the series NCT: Lastart, set to air on July 27.[14] On September 7, 2023, SM revealed the final lineup of the group, now referred to as NCT New Team, through the last episode of NCT Universe: Lastart,: Sion, Riku, Yushi, Jungmin, Daeyoung, Ryo, Sakuya.[15] Prior to debut, the group opened for the rest of NCT at NCT Nation : To The World in Japan in Osaka at the Yanmar Stadium Nagai from September 9–10, and again in Tokyo at the Ajinomoto Stadium from September 16–17.[16] The group will also be holding a pre-debut tour beginning on October 8, which will consist of 28 performances across 10 cities in Japan.[17]

On October 2, 2023, SM Entertainment announced that Jungmin, who was absent from their previous performances, would be departing from NCT and NCT New Team due to health reasons, one week prior to their pre-debut tour.[18] On October 8, NCT New Team released their pre-debut single "Hands Up", with their official debut confirmed for 2024.[19]
