Nick Hayes (footballer)

Nicholas Michael Hayes (born 10 April 1999) is a professional footballer who plays as a goalkeeper for Southend United on loan from Ipswich Town.

He made his competitive first team debut for Salford City in September 2020 in a 6–0 loss to Manchester United under-23s in the EFL Trophy at the age of 21. He did not make another appearance for Salford City and later moved to Hemel Hempstead Town in the National League South on a free transfer. He would go on to make 13 appearances for Hemel Hempstead Town before leaving to go to Ipswich Town on an undisclosed fee.

Club career

Early career

Born in Clacton-on-sea, he started his career at English youth football club Ipswich Town in Ipswich, Suffolk. During his five-year association with the club he also, spent time on loan at Dunstable Town between 2017 and 2018.[3] Following his release from Ipswich, Hayes went onto have spells at Woking and Dunstable Town, permanently, before making the move to Norwich City in February 2019.[4] Proceeding his arrival, he was sent out on loan to Lowestoft Town, before spending the 2019–20 campaign with Hertford Town.[5]

Salford City

On 12 August 2020, Hayes joined EFL League Two side Salford City under head coach Graham Alexander on a free transfer.[6]

He started his first competitive game for Salford in an EFL Trophy group match against the Manchester United under-23 on 9 September 2020.[7] The game ended in a 6-0 loss for Salford and it would be Hayes' only competitive match for the club.

Hemel Hempstead Town

On 5 February 2021, Hayes joined Vanarama National League South side Hemel Hempstead Town on a free transfer.[8] He made his debut for the club in a 3–1 loss against Dorking Wanderers in the National League.

Hayes made 13 league appearances for The Tudors and made his final appearance for the club in a 2–0 loss to Chippenham on 18 December 2021.

Ipswich Town

After impressing during his time at Hemel Hempstead Town and several training sessions with Ipswich Town, Hayes re-signed with the Suffolk club for an undisclosed fee on 31 January 2022.[9]

The Ipswich Town Head of Goalkeeping Rene Gilmartin was quoted in saying "I see potential in Nick, he’s the type of goalkeeper we want to work with and develop further. He’s a local lad that has impressed us with his attitude and ability over the past couple of weeks whilst in training with the goalkeepers. He has the foundations to be an excellent goalkeeper in the future”.[10]

On 12 August 2022, Hayes signed a new 2-year contract with Ipswich Town in August 2024.[11]

On 7 October 2023, Hayes joined National League club Southend United on an initial one-month loan deal.[12]

International career

Hayes played 3 international friendlies for the England U17 in 2015 and 2016 including a 2–2 draw against Germany and 2–1 win over Turkey.
