O6 Ranch

The Kokernot o6 Ranch (also known formerly as simply the o6 Ranch) is a ranch located in Alpine, Texas as well as Fort Davis, Texas. The ranch is officially ranked as the eighth largest ranch in the state of Texas and ninth largest in the United States, and is the second oldest ranch in the world as well as the oldest in general for the state of Texas.

History

The ranch that stands today was acquired in 1912, however it was started in 1836 and officially in 1837 when the o6 brand that is still used today was registered in Calhoun County, Texas by David L. Kokernot. In 1872 it was purchased by John W. Kokernot.[1]

Location

The ranch spans over reportedly 500,000 acres across Jeff Davis County, Pecos County, and Brewster County, Texas.[2]

Reports on the size of the ranch vary, the Texas State Historical Association lists the ranch at 500,000 acres, while other outlets report either it being around 300,000 acres. They are currently the eighth largest ranch in Texas and ninth in the United States, however that is by going with the 278,000 mark, and not at the reported 500,000 mark.

In 1984 a special was aired on TNN showing life on the ranch when country music singer Waylon Jennings came to visit and participate in the Spring Roundup.[3]
