History
The community was founded in 1956.[1] It is a member of the Movement for Reform Judaism and its immediate past Rabbi was Lisa Barrett[2] who vacated the position in May 2021.[3] Prior to Rabbi Lisa Barrett South West Essex and Settlement Reform Synagogue employed eminent Rabbi, Nancy Morris.[4]
Jordan Helfman, formerly of Holy Blossom Temple,[5] took up the post of Senior Rabbi in 2022, supported by former student rabbi Lev Taylor.[6]
It was known as South West Essex Reform Synagogue (SWERS) until 1998, when it merged with the St George's Settlement Synagogue in Stepney.[7]
In July 2023 South West Essex and Settlement Reform Synagogue formerly changed its working name to Oaks Lane Reform Synagogue (although the change of name is to be a working name and not a formal change of the synagogue’s name). A tag line of "Honouring our Past, Building our Future" has also been adopted. [8]
