Oleksandr Bondarev

Oleksandr Bondarev (Ukrainian: Олександр Бондарев; born 27 April 2009) is a Ukrainian kart driver of the OK Junior category as part of the professional Prema Racing team. Pilot of Williams Driver Academy, an initiative of one of the world's leading Formula 1 teams Williams Racing. The youngest Ukrainian karting champion in 2016, winner of the WSK Super Master Series 2022,[1] FIA Karting European Champion in 2023.[2]

Career

Individual sporting career

Oleksandr started karting professionally at the age of 5. His passion for racing began with the cartoon Cars about Lightning McQueen. At the age of 7, he became the youngest karting champion of Ukraine.

At the age of 8, Oleksandr reached the podiums of the Spanish and Portuguese Championships,[3] and at the age of 9 he became the winner of CEE Rotax Max Challenge 2018.[4]

At the age of 9, he began to compete with the world's strongest drivers at the WSK World Karting Series[5] and at official competitions organized by the FIA (International Automobile Federation).

Family karting team

In 2020, at the age of 11, as part of a family karting team, he made his debut in the X-30 Junior category, where he secured 3rd place in the Italian Championship.

In 2021, Oleksandr made his debut in the OK Junior category,[6] where pilots aged 12 to 14 compete. He represented Ukraine at the European and World Championships and other prestigious competitions.

Together with his family team, he managed to reach the podium in the WSK series and took 2nd place at the WSK Euro Series in Sarno. Moreover, according to the results of 3 stages of the FIA Karting Academy Trophy, the pilot became a bronze medalist.

Joining Ricky Flynn Motorsport team

In the 2022 season, Ukrainian pilot Bondarev joined the famous British team Ricky Flynn Motorsport, one of the world's leading competitive teams. RFM is known for its large number of achievements in karting and excellent reputation. One of the team's natives is the famous Formula 1 driver, Lando Norris, who became the world karting champion in 2014 and joined McLaren in F1 in 2019.

At the beginning of the 2022 season, he won the title of champion of the world-famous WSK karting series – WSK Super Master Series. Later, the young racer took 3rd place at the first stage of the Champions of the Future in Portugal.

Later, he had a serious accident at a race in Spain and had to stop participating in competitions to undergo rehabilitation.

After recovering in November, the kart racer returned to the track and finished the season with a 2nd place finish at the LeCont Trophy race in Valencia.

Accident

At the end of April 2022, at the peak of his racing career, Oleksandr was involved in a serious accident at one of the stages of a race in Spain. As a result of the collision, Oleksandr sustained severe leg injuries, underwent ten surgeries, was engaged in daily rehabilitation and was very motivated to return to the track.

After five months of recovery from the incident, the kart racer took part in the LeCont Trophy in Valencia and took 2nd place in the 2022 season.

Joining the Kart Republic team

In 2023, Oleksandr joined the professional Kart Republic team.

As part of the new team, Kart Republic took 2nd place at the third round of the WSK Super Master Series in Sarno.

In May, he won the second round of the Champions of the Future race in the Czech Republic and took 3rd place in the fourth round in Italy.

In July 2023, he won FIA Karting European Championship and became the first Ukrainian driver in the history of karting to win the championship title

The young athlete managed to reach the podium in all 4 rounds of FIA Karting European Championship: he won two races in the Czech Republic and Denmark, took 2nd place in Spain and 3rd place in Italy.

Joining Prema Racing team

In August 2023, Oleksandr Bondarev signed a contract with Italian motorsport team Prema Racing.[7]

Formula One

In September 2023, it was announced that Bondarev joined the Williams Driver Academy.[8]
