POSCO Future M produces cathode active materials and anodes for EV batteries.[3] In June 2022, POSCO and Britishvolt, a UK startup manufacturer of lithium-ion batteries, signed a deal to secure the cathode and anode materials supply.[4] POSCO agreed with GM Motors to supply cathode active material for three years.[5]

Battery Materials

Batteries work through an electrochemical reaction involving lithium(Li) ions that flow back and forth from the positive pole (+) to the negative pole (-) to generate electricity. They can be recharged and reused multiple times, and therefore used to power sustainable mobility including EVs, IT devices and diverse home appliances.

Batteries consist of four elements: cathodes, anodes, electrolytes, and separator. POSCO FUTURE M produces the most essential materials in batteries—cathodes and anodes—and delivers them to the world. POSCO FUTURE M looks forward to becoming a frontrunner in the global market by expanding our production capacity, completing their value chain for raw materials, and conducting R&D in next-generation technologies as a sole producer of both cathodes and anodes in Korea based on in-depth research.

Advanced Chemical Materials

POSCO FUTURE M separate high-purity raw chemical materials from COG and carbon-based by-products, to produce coal tar and light oil, etc. They are used, in turn, as raw materials for anodes in secondary cells and advanced materials like needle cokes.

They stay at the forefront of the industry through the constant development of new technologies and sound investment to ensure global competitiveness in raw materials, productivity and quality.

Basic Industrial Materials

POSCO FUTURE M offers the finest refractories and burned lime, which are vital materials in industrial facilities, laying the foundation for industries including steel.

They are broadening their portfolio to include petrochemicals and energy plants, building on their competitiveness accumulated through their long-term partnership with POSCO's steel business.

Responsible Minerals

POSCO FUTURE M is committed to establishing a responsible chain of mineral supply as their solution for solving social problems such as human rights violations that occur when mining minerals, environmental destruction, direct or indirect support to non state armed groups, money laundering, bribery and fraudulent misrepresentation of the origin of minerals. Thus, POSCO FUTURE M have laid down a five-step process based on the OECD Due Diligence Guidance.

Responsible minerals are those that are mined such that does not fund armed conflicts, respects human rights and the environment, and fulfills social responsibilities. The international community attaches great importance to corporate responsibility for responsible minerals given the seriousness of conflict zones across the African continent (e.g. armed groups seizing distribution networks, child labor, human rights violations), the home of major responsible minerals. Accordingly, POSCO FUTURE M complies with the OECD Due Diligence Guidance for Responsible Supply Chain of Minerals and the RMI Responsible Minerals Assurance Process.
