Peter Narváez

Peter Narváez (born Peter Reuben Aceves; March 16, 1942 – November 11, 2011) was a Canadian writer, scholar, folklorist, and musician known for his contributions to the study of folklore, ethnomusicology, and Canadian culture.[1]

Early life and education

Born in St. John's, Newfoundland, Narváez earned a BA in English from Memorial University of Newfoundland, an MA in folklore from the University of California, Berkeley, and a PhD in folklore from Indiana University. He began his academic career as a professor of English at Memorial University of Newfoundland in 1969 and later became a professor of folklore and ethnomusicology at the same university. He was also a visiting professor at several universities in Canada, the United States, and Europe.[2]

Career

Narváez was widely recognized as a leading expert in the field of folklore and ethnomusicology, with a particular focus on Canadian culture. He conducted extensive fieldwork throughout Newfoundland and Labrador, documenting and preserving the region's oral traditions, music, and dance. His research interests also included the study of immigrant cultures in Canada, African American music, and the cultural impact of technology.[3]

In addition to his academic work, Narváez was also a prolific writer and musician. He also published numerous articles and essays in academic journals and popular media.

Narváez was also an accomplished musician, playing guitar, accordion, and fiddle. He was a member of several Newfoundland-based bands, including the Plankerdown Band and the Newfoundland Symphony Orchestra, and was known for his performances of traditional Newfoundland music.

Throughout his career, Narváez received numerous awards and honors for his contributions to Canadian culture and academia. He was a fellow of the Royal Society of Canada, a recipient of the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Folklore Studies Association of Canada, and a member of the Order of Canada.[4]
