• Tigray War
  • The Tigray People's Liberation Front (TPLF) launches a surprise attack on the Northern Command of the federal army of Ethiopia, resulting in multiple casualties and the capture of 5 federal military bases in Tigray Region including the Northern Command headquarters. Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed orders a military response, saying that the "last red line has been crossed". Later in the day, federal troops enter the region and heavy fighting is reported. • 2020 Atlantic hurricane season
  • Hurricane Eta is set to head towards Florida after hitting the Caribbean and Central America, especially Nicaragua and parts of Honduras. The slow-moving hurricane, which peaked at category 4, caused floods and devastation in Nicaragua and hurricane warnings are still in place for parts of Nicaragua. (CNN)

• French Interior Minister Gérald Darmanin declares that the Turkish ultranationalist group Grey Wolves has been outlawed, stating they "[incite] discrimination and hatred and [are] involved in violent actions".     • The outcome of the 2020 United States presidential election is still undetermined. Incumbent President Donald Trump declares victory despite not reaching the required 270 electoral votes needed to win. Former Vice President Joe Biden, having more projected electoral votes, says, "We're on track to win this election."     • Protesters took to the streets for a second night in a row as the presidential election inched closer to results.
