• 2022 Nobel Prize in Literature
  • French author Annie Ernaux is awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature for "the courage and clinical acuity with which she uncovers the roots, estrangements and collective restraints of personal memory". (Reuters)
• The Irish Dancing Commission, Ireland's governing body for Irish dancing, appoints a former judge to investigate claims of prominent dance schools and teachers fixing competitions. (The Guardian)

  • Belarusian president Alexander Lukashenko bans price increases as part of an effort to reduce inflation in the country. (The Moscow Times)

• 2022 Atlantic hurricane season
  • Hurricane Ian's death toll increases to 130, with 125 deaths in the United States and five in Cuba, making it the 24th deadliest hurricane in US history. (CNN)
• At least 15 people are killed and 20 others are missing after a boat carrying migrants sinks off the eastern coast of the Greek island of Lesbos. Five others have been rescued. (CNA)

• War on drugs
  • U.S. President Joe Biden announces that he will pardon anyone who was convicted on prior federal charges, or who was convicted in the District of Columbia, for marijuana possession. (CNBC)
• 2022 Nong Bua Lamphu massacre
  • At least 36 people, including 24 children, are killed and 10 others injured when a dismissed policeman open fire in a mass shooting, which started at a daycare centre in Na Klang district, Thailand. The perpetrator later commits suicide after killing his family at his home. (AP)
• 2022 Las Vegas Strip stabbings
  • Two people are killed and six others are injured, three of them critically, in a mass stabbing on the Las Vegas Strip in Paradise, Nevada, United States. (KTNV-TV)
• Iran's IRIB broadcasts purported confessions from two French citizens accused of espionage. This broadcast comes in the context of the Mahsa Amini protests which began in September as well as the claim by the Iranian government that the protests are an attempt by France and other countries such as the United States and Israel to overthrow the current Iranian Islamic government.
