The film tells the story of a widowed clownfish named Marlin and his son Nemo who lives on the Great Barrier Reef, Australia. Other characters include Dory, a blue tang who suffers from short-term memory loss, Bruce, a good-hearted great white shark, and Crush, the sea turtle.

The film's prominent use of clownfish has wide effects including mass purchase of the animals for children's pets in the United States.
