Mecklenburg-Vorpommern
... is a federal state in the northeast of the Federal Republic of Germany. Its capital city is Schwerin. From a geographical perspective Mecklenburg-Vorpommern belongs to North Germany. It was founded in 1945 from a merger of the historic states of Mecklenburg (which made up about two thirds of the area of the new state) and that part of the former Prussian province of Western Pomerania (Vorpommern), west of the Oder-Neiße Line, that remained in Germany. In addition, it was given small parts of the Prignitz and the Uckermark, bother formerly part of Brandenburg. The state had its status confirmed in 1990 following German Reunification. Did you know, that ... ...as a result of protests by the GDR government arising from fears of flooding in the area of Boizenburg the planned top water level of the Elbe Barrage at Geesthacht, which came into operation in 1960, was lowered by around 1.65 metres? In addition a toll was introduced for Federal German ships in order to pay for the associated protection measures. Culture, Society, Education and Science
