1831 – The Allegheny Portage Railroad in Pennsylvania begins construction on the Staple Bend Tunnel, the first railroad tunnel in the United States.[1]
1862 – Andrew's Raiders steal The General and drive it north toward Chattanooga, Tennessee, with Western and Atlantic Railroad conductor William Fuller chasing it in the Great Locomotive Chase.

1905 – The Hanshin Main Line connecting Osaka and Kobe, Japan, opens and becomes one of the oldest interurban lines in the country.
1919 – Ryutaro Nomura succeeds Simbei Kunisawa for a second term as president of South Manchuria Railway.
1970 – Chicago, Burlington and Quincy Railroad discontinues its Black Hawk passenger train service between Chicago and Minneapolis/St. Paul, Minnesota.
1995 – The Chicago and North Western Railway is merged into the Union Pacific Railroad.
1996 – Connex is awarded a concession to operate on Great Britain's south central network.[2]
1999 – A suspended monorail train on the Schwebebahn Wuppertal system falls from the track, a distance of 8 metres (26 ft); five passengers are killed and 46 others are wounded in the accident.[2]
