- 1830 – The South Carolina Canal and Rail Road (now a part of Norfolk Southern Railway) begins operations of the first regularly scheduled train service in the United States with the steam locomotive Best Friend of Charleston (replica pictured).
- 1848 – The New York, New Haven and Hartford Railroad opens[1] using trackage rights over the New York and Harlem Railroad from Woodlawn south to Grand Central Terminal, which served as the New Haven's New York City terminal.
- 1854 – The Bytown and Prescott Railway in Canada opens, inaugurating the first rail service to the present day city of Ottawa.[2]
- 2014 – Indian Railways inaugurates the Sushasan Express, connecting Gwalior and Gonda, Uttar Pradesh, in commemoration of former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee's 91st birthday.
