- 1831 – The West Chester Railroad is chartered in Pennsylvania.
- 1848 – The Cleveland, Painesville and Ashtabula Railroad, a predecessor of the Lake Shore and Michigan Southern Railway, is chartered in Ohio.[1]
- 2003 – An arsonist in a suicide attempt causes the Daegu subway fire (pictured) when he sets fire to a train stopped at Jungangno station of the Daegu Metropolitan Subway in Daegu, South Korea; 198 people die and 147 others are injured.
- 2004 – Nishapur train disaster: A train carrying a convoy of petrol, fertiliser, and sulfur derails and explodes in Iran, killing 320 people.
