1853 – The Cincinnati, Cambridge and Chicago Short Line Railway, a predecessor of Pennsylvania Railroad, is incorporated in Indiana to build from New Castle southeast via Cambridge to the Ohio state line.
1886 – The North Hudson County Railway in New Jersey opens the first elevated cable railway in the United States, the Hoboken Elevated.[1]
1958 – Robert Ralph Young, financier and controlling stockholder of the New York Central commits suicide after suspending company dividends, dies (b. 1897).
1999 – The New York City Transit Authority installs the first MetroCard Vending Machines (example pictured) at two subway stations in the city.[2]
