- 1871 – The Canada Central Railway holds an official groundbreaking ceremony at Renfrew for the railroad's section between there and Sand Point, Ontario.
- 1897 – At the railroad's first stockholder meeting, the Toledo and Milwaukee Railroad, a predecessor of the Lake Shore and Michigan Southern Railway, officially changes its name to Detroit, Toledo and Milwaukee Railroad.
- 1906 – The State Street Line, Chicago's last cable car route, ends operations.
- 1920 – William Kissam Vanderbilt (pictured), heir to Cornelius Vanderbilt and president of the New York Central system, dies (b. 1849).
