- 1828 – Construction begins on the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad in Baltimore, Maryland.
- 1851 – Groundbreaking ceremonies are held for the Pacific Railroad Company, a railroad later to become the Missouri Pacific Railroad.
- 1970 – Harold Stirling Vanderbilt, heir to Cornelius Vanderbilt and president of the New York Central railroad system, dies (b. 1884).
- 2002 – General Motors Electro-Motive Division announces that it will build new locomotives for HSBC Rail; the locomotives will be leased by CargoNet (pictured) for use in Norway north of the Arctic Circle and are expected to enter service after February 2003.
