19th century

1826 – The first train operates over the Granite Railway, one of the first railroads in North America, in Massachusetts.

20th century

1905 – New Haven Railroad acquires control of Willimantic Traction Company.[1]

21st century

2001 – Railtrack, in England, is placed under legal administration by Stephen Byers, Secretary of State for Transport, effectively renationalizing the system.
2003 – RENFE opens the Madrid-Lerida section of the railroad's new Madrid-Barcelona line in Spain.

Deaths

1927 – Godfrey M. Hyams, financier for Deepwater Railway and Tidewater Railway, dies (b. 1859).
1968 – Richard M. Dilworth, General Motors Electro-Motive Division chief engineer credited with developing the diesel-electric locomotive concept in the 1930s, dies (b. 1885).[2]
