Portrait of a Gentleman is a 1948 Australian play by George Farwell about Thomas Griffiths Wainewright.[1]

It was originally a 1940 radio play on the ABC starring Peter Finch.[2] It won first prize in an ABC radio play competition.[3]

A stage play version was announced in 1941[4] and was highly commended in a 1945 playwriting competition.[5]

The radio play aired again in 1946,[6] 1951[7] and 1956.[8]

The play was published in a 1946 anthology of Australian radio plays.[9]

Leslie Rees called it "a convincing and stylish hour-long radio drama, in which a bizarre character was strongly projected but kept believably human. "[10]

Premise

Thomas Wainwright goes to live with his uncle in London. He winds up in Van Diemens Land.[11]
