Multishow Brazilian Music Award

The Multishow Brazilian Music Award (in Portuguese: Prêmio Multishow de Música Brasileira) is the largest music award in Brazil,[1][2][3] held annually by the Multishow channel. Its first edition took place in 1994, in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, with the aim of recognizing the best of the Brazilian music scene throughout the year through voting by its audience and (starting in 2011) by a specialized jury composed of journalists and music industry professionals.[4]

In the first few years of the award, it was called the TVZ Award, and it was only in 1998 that it became known as the Multishow Award. This award serves as an alternative to the Brazilian Music Award (in Portuguese: Prêmio da Música Brasileira) and follows a format similar to the MTV Video Music Awards. Until 2008, the award ceremony took place at the Municipal Theater of Rio de Janeiro, in the center of the city. Currently, the award is held at the Jeunesse Arena in Rio de Janeiro. The most awarded artist of the event is singer Ivete Sangalo, with 20 awards, followed by Anitta with 19 awards.[5][6][7][8][9][10][11]

In its first edition in 1994, the internet was not yet common, so the nominees and winners were chosen through telephone voting, limited to subscribers of cable television. Cissa Guimarães hosted the phone calls and also presented the event. The award was called TVZ at that time.[12]

In the second edition, the event continued to be named the TVZ Award, and telephone voting was still used. However, the venue for the event changed, moving from JazzMania to the Ballroom, both located in Rio de Janeiro. The master of ceremonies was also different this time, with Mylena Ceribelli hosting the award ceremony. [12]

1998 was the year of major changes. The award changed its name to the Multishow Brazilian Music Award and introduced four new categories: Best Instrumentalist, Best Song, Best Show, and Best Album.[13]

In the sixth edition of the award in 1999, the selection of the winners shifted from telephone to the internet. The award night closed with a performance by Frejat and Cássia Eller, singing "Malandragem." Caetano Veloso was named the Best Singer, and when he took the stage to express his gratitude, all that was heard was a hoarse voice saying, "The best singer has no voice today". [14]

In the year 2000, the award ceremony was held on the stage of Theatro Municipal. Nelson Motta and Fernanda Torres were the hosts of the event.[15]

Starting from 2001, Multishow began honoring an artist for their contribution to Brazilian music.[16]

In 2002, another category was introduced at the awards: Best DVD.[17]

In 2004, the presenter Hebe Camargo, then 75 years old, surprised everyone by displaying a fake belly button piercing. She also joked about the scandal involving actress Luma de Oliveira and firefighter Albucacys Júnior: "I'm on fire! Call the firefighter!".[18]

In 2005, when winning the Best Instrumentalist award, Junior Lima was booed by part of the audience. Lima said, "This here only serves as an incentive for me to study a lot. One day, I'll look at this award and say, 'today, I deserve it,' but for now, it's just motivation".[19]

The host of the 15th edition in 2008 was actor Lázaro Ramos.[20]

In 2009, the highlight of the night was the pregnant singer Ivete Sangalo, who performed with her baby bump showing. Rita Lee was the honored guest, receiving the award from her granddaughter, Izabella.[21]

The 2010 awards ceremony was hosted by actors Bruno Mazzeo and Fernanda Torres and lasted about 2 hours. The event featured performances by various artists, including Nando Reis and Skank, who opened the event with their version of "Vem Morena," a composition by Luiz Gonzaga.[22]

At the 2011 ceremony, Paula Fernandes, NX Zero, and Restart were the big winners, each receiving two awards. The event paid tribute to the great variety shows of the 1980s, such as those hosted by Silvio Santos, Chacrinha, and Xuxa (Xou da Xuxa).[23]

At the 2021 event, for the first time, the voting for a category was suspended at the request of fans and the nominees themselves. In this case, Anitta, Ivete Sangalo, and Iza were competing for the title of Female Singer of the Year. As a tribute, Marília Mendonça, who was one of the candidates, was declared the winner of that category.[24]

In 2022, the categories Female Singer of the Year and Male Singer of the Year were replaced by Artist of the Year and Voice of the Year, combining the two titles into one category and increasing the number of nominees for the awards.[25]

At the 2023 event, the awards ceremony was broadcast live on TV Globo for the first time, marking the celebration of the thirtieth edition of the Multishow Brazilian Music Award. However, the award ceremony continued to be broadcast in its entirety on Multishow from the red carpet, while TV Globo aired only the final moments, including the trophy presentations. The big news in this edition is the inclusion of the Brazil Category, which gathers the 27 most popular songs from each state in Brazil. These songs were chosen by the award's academy. The 27 selected tracks will go through public voting, and the top five voted from each region will advance to the final stage.[26] This year also saw the addition of new categories for each Brazilian musical style and changes in the voting process. Only the categories of TVZ Music Video of the Year, Hit of the Year, Concert of the Year, Voice of the Year, and the Brazil Category will be open for public voting, while the others will be chosen by the academy.[27] The Artist of the Year category will have a new feature where the winner will be chosen by the other nominated artists.[28][29][30]
