During the 1970s, Vietnamese refugees who were fleeing their homeland due to political unrest went through the United Nations' Refugee Council Transit Camp on Tengah Island. This campsite was a temporary haven for the refugees. The campsite was closed in the early 1980s.[1]

Recognizing its ecological significance, the Malaysian government nominated Tengah Island as a marine park in 1985.[2] This designation underscores the island's importance in preserving marine biodiversity and promoting sustainable conservation practices.

Tengah Island is strategically located, being approximately 16 kilometers away from Besar Island. Accessible via a short 20-minute boat ride, the island offers a pristine natural environment, making it a popular destination for tourists and conservation enthusiasts. One notable establishment on the island is the Batu Batu resort, providing visitors with an opportunity to experience the island's beauty and engage in various recreational activities.

In addition to being a tourist destination, Tengah Island is dedicated to wildlife conservation. The Batu Batu resort runs the Turtle Watch Camp, a conservation program aimed at safeguarding sea turtles and their habitats. This initiative includes educational activities, guided tours, and efforts to protect nesting sites, contributing to the preservation of these endangered marine creatures.

Furthermore, Tengah Island gained recognition on a global stage when it was selected as a filming location for the TV show Expedition Robinson in 1997.[3] This televised survival-based reality show brought the island's natural beauty and unique landscape to the attention of a wider audience.
