Robot Dreams (film)

Robot Dreams is a 2023 Spanish-French animated tragicomedy[4] film written and directed by Pablo Berger.[5] It is based on the comic of the same name by Sara Varon.[6] It is about the inseparable friendship between a dog and a robot in Manhattan, New York in the 1980s.[7]

Robot Dreams had its world premiere at the 76th Cannes Film Festival on May 21, 2023, in the Special Screenings section.[8] It received the award for Best Film in the Contrechamp section of the Annecy International Animation Film Festival.[9]

Synopsis

DOG is a lonely dog who lives in Manhattan. One day he decides to build himself a robot, a friend. Their friendship grows, until they become inseparable, to the rhythm of New York in the 80s. One summer night, Dog with great sorrow, is forced to abandon ROBOT on the beach. Will they meet again?[10]

Production

The animation process began in mid-June 2021 in Madrid, Spain and then moved to the Iruñea studios.[11]

Festivals

Robot Dreams had its world premiere on May 21, 2023, in the Special Screenings section of the 76th Cannes Film Festival,[12] then screened on June 12, 2023, at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival,[13] on July 23, 2023, at the New Zealand International Film Festival[14] and on August 14, 2023, at the 29th Sarajevo Film Festival.[15] It will be screened on September 7, 2023, at the 48th Toronto International Film Festival[16] and in October 2023 at the 56th Sitges Film Festival.[17]

Theatrical

It is scheduled for its commercial release on December 6, 2023, in Spanish theaters[18] to then expand to the French market on December 27, 2023.[19] Neon acquired the distribution rights to release in North American territory.[20][21]

Critical reception

On the review aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes, 100% of 11 critics' reviews are positive, with an average rating of 7.9/10.[22]
