Rodion Amirov

Rodion Ruslanovich Amirov (Russian: Родион Русланович Амиров; Bashkir: Родион Руслан улы Әмиров, romanized: Rodion Ruslan ulı Ämirov; 2 October 2001 – 14 August 2023) was a Russian professional ice hockey forward who played with Salavat Yulaev Ufa in the Kontinental Hockey League (KHL). He was drafted in the first round, 15th overall by the Toronto Maple Leafs in the 2020 NHL Entry Draft.[1]

In this name that follows Eastern Slavic naming conventions, the patronymic is Ruslanovich and the family name is Amirov.

Playing career

Amirov played youth hockey within the system of his hometown club, Salavat Yulaev Ufa of the Kontinental Hockey League (KHL).[2] Amirov played through junior affiliates, Tolpar Ufa and Supreme Hockey League farm club Toros Neftekamsk, before making his debut with Salavat Yulaev Ufa in the KHL during the 2019–20 season.[2]

Amirov as a 19 year-old appeared in a career best 39 games for Salavat Yulaev in his second KHL season with Ufa in 2020–21, recording 9 goals and 13 points to rank third among under-20 skaters in the KHL before going scoreless in nine playoff games for the club.[3][2]

On 15 April 2021, Amirov agreed to a three-year entry-level contract with draft club, the Toronto Maple Leafs. He immediately moved to North America, to be assigned to the Maple Leafs AHL affiliate, the Toronto Marlies, for the remainder of the 2020–21 season.[4]

On 23 February 2022, Toronto Maple Leafs general manager Kyle Dubas shared that Amirov was diagnosed with a brain tumor and was undergoing treatment.[5]

After missing the entirety of the 2022–23 season, due to ongoing treatment and recovery, Amirov extended his contract with Salavat Yulaev by agreeing to a one-year loan from the Maple Leafs for the following 2023–24 season on 10 May 2023.[6]

Death

After his February 2022 cancer diagnosis, Amirov returned to his family home in Ufa to continue treatment;[7] he later received additional treatment in Munich and Toronto.[8] On 14 August 2023, Amirov's agent, Dan Milstein, announced his death via a statement on Twitter.[3][8]
