Shruti Vora

Shruti Vora (born 6 January 1971 in Kolkata) is an Indian equestrienne. She represented India at the 2022 FEI World Championships (Equestrian Games) held at Herning, Denmark. Anush Agarwalla and Shruti were the first Indians to compete in an individual dressage event at the Dressage World Championships.[1] She was astride 16-year Indian-bred Denightron and scored 64.53%.[2] She qualified for the World Championship at Hagen in June 2022.[3] Vora represented India and finished 8th at the 2014 Asian Games at Incheon.

Early life

Shruti was born in Kolkata to Bimal and Nandini Nopany, a business Marwari family.[4] Despite coming from a conservative family, her mother used to ride horses and soon Shruti too started loving horses. Her brother Chandra Sekhar too was riding horses till his Class 12. She did her schooling at the famous Loreto House. She married Mitul Vora in 1997 and took a 14-year break after marriage.[5] She has two sons Varun and Aryan.[6] In 2009, she returned to competitive sport again.[7] She did her B.Com honours, at Shri Shikshayatan College, Kolkata, University of Calcutta and studied MBA at European University, Geneva, Switzerland in 1994.

Career

Shruti took up the sport at an early age of 3 years and later went to the Army Riding School, Ballygunge and learnt basics under Ms Kiran Singh and Balbir Singh, a retired Army personnel. After a 14-year break after marriage, she relocated to Europe to train. In the later years she trained under Ahluwallia. However, she took up Dressage inspired by Dr Reiner Klimke (14 January 1936 – 17 August 1999), a German equestrian, who won six gold and two bronze medals in dressage at the Summer Olympics. She briefly trained under Dr Klimke, going to Germany on the week-ends, while she was doing her MBA. She also briefly trained under another Olympic medallist, Anne Jensen-Van Olst, a Danish dressage rider. Later for one year she trained under Patrick Le Rolland, viewed as one of the gifted French Dresseurs, and coach of the French National Team in 1981 and 1984. Then after her MBA she returned to India and got married.
