Plot

In the opening sequence, an excited young Prince Stolas receives his grimoire from his father Paimon on his birthday. However, upon being informed of who he is arranged to be married to, the young Stella, he bursts out crying. In order to stop his son's crying, Paimon takes Stolas to an imp-run travelling circus. Stolas' attention is piqued by the young Blitzo, who is a performer in the circus, alongside his friend, Fizzarolli.

After the circus, Paimon asks Cash Buckzo, Blitzo's father and the head of the circus, if he can "buy" Blitzo for a day in order for him to serve as a playmate for Stolas. Blitzo is secretly instructed by his father to steal things from Stolas' home, but despite this the two still become friends.

Twenty-five years later, Stolas is at a party intended to celebrate his and Stella's anniversary, where he overhears her insulting him to her friends. He leaves the party early and drinks by himself, before finding Blitzo attempting to break into his study. Stolas assumes that Blitzo was breaking in to "seduce" him, and although Blitzo was only there to steal Stolas' grimoire, he goes along with it in order to prevent being caught for his true intentions.

The next morning, Stolas is awoken by the sound of a half-naked Blitzo falling off the balcony and into Stella's garden party, informing her that he had sex with Stolas.[lower-alpha 1] Stella, enraged, questions Stolas as to what just happened, and Stolas tells her instead that he is divorcing her.

In the present day, the morning after his disastrous date with Blitzo in "Ozzie's," Stolas awakens and reflects on his and Blitzo's relationship ("Stolas Sings"). He is interrupted by Stella, who begins to argue with him, before swearing vengeance on him.

Production and release

The episode stars Brandon Rogers as Blitzo and Bryce Pinkham as Stolas, with Mason Blomberg voicing a young Blitzo and Leander Lewis voicing a young Stolas.[7] Remy Edgerly voices a young Fizzarolli, while Georgina Leahy reprises her role as Stella, and special guest star Jonathan Freeman voices both Stolas' father Paimon, and Blitzo's father Cash Buckzo.

The animation was produced by SpindleHorse Toons. The storyboarding was done by Samantha Ambritz, Zach Giering, and Lidia Liu.[8] Horseless Cowboy voice directed the episode, with the episode premiering on July 30, 2022.[1][2] It attained an excess of 4 million views within the first 15 hours of its release.[4]

Reception

Critical reception

In a retrospect of the series, Hope Mullinax of The Geeky Waffle marked Blitzo's and Stolas' romance in "The Circus" as "everything to me! To get personal for a second, it’s many of my favorite romantic tropes rolled up into one series: different class backgrounds, power dynamics, two single dorky dads trying to raise their daughters, insecurities abound, a childhood background together, and miscommunications."[9] Zoe Dumas of MovieWeb noted that "Disney fans will recognize Stolas’ father Paimon as Jonathan Freeman, the long-time voice of Jafar."[10]

Reporting on a shot of Stolas from "The Circus" having become an internet meme, Jessica Nicole of Inside the Magic complimented Stolas' "fairly dramatic and theatrical character" in the episode, stating "the Disney princess sob is pretty in-character for him."[11]
