Top News is a 24-hour Albanian television news channel that first aired in February 2007. [1]

Top News is owned by the Top Media Group which also owns Top Channel, Top Albania Radio, and DigitAlb. Top News is available via DigitAlb on all three of its formats - satellite, terrestrial and via mobile phone and via Home2US in North America.

History

On December 18th, 2006, the channel has been created and had started experimental broadcasts to prepare for the channel's release.

In February of 2007, the channel has started its broadcast by the Top Media group to broadcast just like Top Channel but in 24/7 news. The idents and channel interface would make the channel more popular to watch news, especially during the 2018–2019 student protest in Albania and the 2019 Albania earthquake in which Top Channel livestreamed multiple protests and even daily broadcasts about the earthquake on YouTube to make it more accessible.

In 2018, Top News is now available to be livestreamed via Dailymotion, and at Top Channel's site. Soon the livestream would be moved to Twitch.[2][3]

On March 8th, 2020, the channel changed its idents to a simpler version.

On January 1st, 2021, HD support had been added and the channel remade the channel's interface and to this day they still use them. A day later the logo even got changed to a more simple version, which are still in use.[4]

On March 1st, 2021 even the idents were changed to a way more simpler version. These new idents are still in use. Later on they included programs on this channel.[5]

Trivia

Every hour, the channel plays their hourly introduction ident after ending the photonews section.

Every thirty minutes after the hour, the channel features the weather for today and tomorrow.

Top News itself even has an introduction video which teases how would the channel look like. The video was made by Behar Dani according to the video's title.[6]

The staff at Top News even made a tour video in the New Year of 2008 demonstrating their studio. [7]

Their slogan: "Informohu i pari", meaning "The first to inform", was used since its foundation in 2007. [8]

They even used another slogan in their new hourly (o'clock) ident in January 2021 which says: "Raportim mbi fakte", meaning "Reporting on facts".

Their website: "www.top-news.tv" redirected to Top Channel's website (https://top-channel.tv) which was used in their previous hourly ident.

Programs

Since Top News had changed their idents in 2020, Top News had included programs, making the channel similar to Top Channel but in a news platform. This list includes every program findable.

Breaking

Breaking is a program where people talk about politics and corruption around Albania. The program started broadcasting from Mondays to Fridays in 2022. The program was originally hosted by Deniza Ruzi and Elisa Gjerani.[9][10] When Deniza Ruzi takes over the program it usually broadcasts for four hours from 10:00 to 14:00. When Elisa Gjerani takes over the program it was only broadcast from 10:00 to 12:00. On August 2023, the program was broadcast for the last time before being reintroduced and remade on September 4th, 2023. The program is now hosted by four hosts with Elisa Gjerani no longer present in this program. The first host is Fiori Dardha, the one who starts the program, broadcasting Monday to Friday at 09:00 until 12:00. The second host is now Denisa Ruzi, who is now the only host that hosts the program on weekends, at 10:00 until 13:00, and again at 16:00 until 19:00. The third host is Xhoi Malësia, who hosts the program Monday to Friday from 13:00 to 16:00. The fourth and final host is Dafina Hysa, who hosts the program Monday to Friday at 17:00 until the program ends at 20:00.[11][12][13][14]

Ora e Tiranës (Hour of Tirana)

Ora e Tiranës is a program created on February 10th, 2020 to celebrate the 100 year anniversary of Tirana, Albania's capital. The program usually talks about life in the capital. The program itself was broadcast on both Top Channel and Top News. Before the schedule of the program was to broadcast on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at 17:00 (two hours before the same episode would be also premiered on YouTube). The program schedule is now every wednesday at 20:00 after the program "Breaking" comes to an end. The host of this program is Xhani Shqerra.

Cartel

Cartel is a program which started broadcast on the 2nd of July, 2023. The program airs every sunday at 21:00. The program talks about the following:

  • Cartels/mafias and their kingpins from around the world
  • Police seizing amounts of narcotics from mafias/cartels
  • Stories and information about cartel members, leaders and kingpins

The "$NEWSP" script

Since Top News was created in 2007, there was a rare script of text used which displays "$NEWSP". It is a command made and used to update the description of news, sports, and economy information. At any time, the bottom text will display this text because the bottom text is loading new information or is reloading news, sport, and economy information. The "$NEWSP" command is still in use to this day even after the interface changing. It is very rarely seen due to updates not happening often in the morning, mostly during nighttimes.[15]

Possible explanation of the command

$ is the symbol used to make the command possible. The type of encoding the command uses is unknown.

NEWS is a command used for the description of information on the bottom area (where text is shown as information).

It is unknown what does the "P" stand for in "$NEWSP".
