Topoli (rural-type settlement)

Topoli (Ukrainian: Тополі, Russian: Тополи, both names meaning lit.'Poplars') is a rural-type settlement in Kupiansk Raion, Kharkiv Oblast, Ukraine. During the Russian invasion in 2022, the village was captured early in the war by Russian forces, but was liberated by Ukrainian forces in a successful counteroffensive in September 2022, causing the town to remain a frontline settlement today.[2] The village's border checkpoint on the border with Russia has become important in the logistics of the local area.

Geography

Topoli is located not far from the border with Russia. Topoli is located on the left bank of the Oskil River. On the other side of the Oskil, to the west, there is a village, also called Topoli.

Its elevation is 107 meters.[3]

History

The town was founded in 1920, but its history started in 1725.

Since June 24, 2017, there has been a border service point named after the town Topoli (border checkpoint), which was opened by Interior Minister Arsen Avakov and NSDC Secretary Oleksandr Turchynov.

On June 12, 2020, in accordance with the Order of the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine No. 725-p "On the definition of administrative centers and approval of territories of territorial communities of Kharkiv oblast", it became part of Dvorichna settlement hromada.[4] On July 19, 2020, as a result of further administrative-territorial reforms that abolished Dvorichna Raion, the village became part of Kupiansk Raion of Kharkiv Oblast. [5]

The town was occupied by Russian troops from February 24, 2022 during the Russian invasion of Ukraine, before abandoning the village during Ukraine's 2022 Kharkiv counteroffensive.[6][7] However, it took until September 7, 2023 for the State Border Guard Service of Ukraine to reenter the village during the 2023 Ukrainian counteroffensive due to Russian forces maintaining artillery control and extensive mining over the settlement.[8]
