While there is a population of waterbirds at the reservoir's wetlands, it is known to vary considerably within each season but be steady year-to-year. The reservoir has stable water levels.[4] Fish species known to inhabit the lake include the silver carp (142 specimens),[5] the bighead carp (126),[6] the Common bream (278), and the Amur white bream (83).[7] A total of 29 species of fish, 15 species of zooplankton (including rotifers and copepods), and 9 species of macrozoobenthos (including crustaceans and annelids) are known from the reservoir.[1]

It was created from a pre-existing lake in the 1950s, and is the biggest bulk reservoir in the Navoiy Region.[1] The reservoir has been designated a protected Ramsar site since 2020.[2]
