Early life
Grey grew up in San Francisco.[6] She became interested in composing and recording music at the age of six,[1] and cites Skrillex[2] as an early influence. She has Filipina heritage.[7]
Career
Grey began releasing music as Underscores on SoundCloud in 2013 at the age of thirteen,[8] however the first single still available from her is "Mild Season", which released in 2015.[1] In 2016, she was featured as a finalist in a mix contest hosted by the electronic label Monstercat.[9] In 2018, she independently released the collection Skin Purifying Treatment, which marked the current iteration of the project,[6] followed by We Never Got Strawberry Cake in 2019 and Character Development! on San Holo's record label Bitbird in 2020.[1]
She released her debut studio album, Fishmonger, in 2021. It features appearances from 8485, Knapsack (who now goes under the name Gabby Start[10]), and Maxwell Young.[2] It appeared on The Atlantic's list of the ten best albums of 2021,[3] and drew the attention of several high-profile electronic and alternative musicians, such as Travis Barker of Blink-182, Glaive and Lido.[1]
Fishmonger's follow-up EP, Boneyard AKA Fearmonger, was released in December 2021. It features production from Barker, as well as Brakence.[6]
On March 23, 2022, The Atlantic expressed that Grey makes "music that is nonbinary both in form and in content".[11]
Marking "the last piece of the Fishmonger era", Underscores released a single titled "Count of Three (You Can Eat $#@!)" through Dog Show Records, Atlantic Records, and her own imprint, Corporate RockMusic. The single released globally on January 20, 2023, featuring co-production work from Dylan Brady of 100 gecs (who founded and owns the Dog Show imprint), Benny Blanco, Cashmere Cat, and mixing from Serban Ghenea.[12]
On May 3, 2023, Grey released a single titled "Cops and Robbers".[13][14] The accompanying album, Wallsocket, was officially announced on July 12, 2023, along with the single "Locals (Girls Like Us)" with Gabby Start, a frequent collaborator and close friend of Grey. Wallsocket was released on September 22, 2023, on Mom + Pop and Corporate RockMusic. Alongside Start, the album also includes features from Jane Remover and Henhouse!.[15][16]
In 2021, Grey toured as an opening act for 100 gecs.[2] Underscores' first headlining tour, The Gone Fishin' Minitour, took place in 2022.[1] Her second headlining tour, the Hometown Tour, was announced on June 7, 2023 and is intended to align with the release and promotion of Wallsocket.[17]
Other projects
Grey is a member of several electronic music groups, including the group Six Impala,[18] the online music collective FromTheHeart (which disbanded in late 2020),[19] and the group CurryRice with fellow Six Impala member Script.[20]
She also releases experimental remixes and original music under the pseudonym Milkfish on the streaming service SoundCloud, and occasionally plays live events as Milkfish through broadcasters such as Boiler Room.[21]
Personal life
Grey is a trans woman.[22]
