Villainess Level 99: I May Be the Hidden Boss but I'm Not the Demon Lord (悪役令嬢レベル99　～私は裏ボスですが魔王ではありません～, Akuyaku Reijō Reberu 99: Watashi wa Ura Bosudesuga Maō de wa Arimasen) is a Japanese light novel series written by Satori Tanabata with illustrations by Tea. It initially began serialization as a web novel published on the user-generated novel publishing site Shōsetsuka ni Narō in June 2018. It was then acquired by Fujimi Shobo who began publish to publish it as a light novel under their Kadokawa Books imprint in May 2019. A manga adaptation illustrated by Nokomi began serialization in Enterbrain's B's Log Comic magazine in February 2020. An anime television series adaptation produced by Jumondou is set to premiere in January 2024.

Premise

Yumiella Dolkness is a reincarnator. Being the secret boss in an otome RPG Light Magic and the Hero, she decides to level grind in order to survive, spending her childhood doing so. Later it turns out she goofed and overachieved; Level 10 was the highest expected from students, but she maxed out at Level 99, causing unnecessary attention and deviation from the game script.

The main character and reincarnated girl; meant to be the Secret Boss of the otome game following the Demon Lord's defeat. However, she plans to live a peaceful life and overachieved her level to have the power to stay safe. Yumiella attempts to befriend Alicia, to assuage paranoia, but the capture targets keep interfering. She's a bit weird, but means well.
Patrick Ashbatten (パトリック・アッシュバトン, Patorikku Asshubaton)
Voiced by: Yuma Uchida (drama CD, vomic, anime)[2][3]
The male lead, and Yumiella's only classmate who didn't fear her. He loves Yumiella, but can't get his feelings through to her for the longest time, instead keeping her nutty ideas under control in the meantime. He does later become Level 99 like her, meeting her (fake) standard for a marriage partner.
Ryu
Yumiella's pet dragon. Originally meant to found by Alicia during an event. Yumiella nurtured Ryu's egg with her dark magic, resulting in a full grown black dragon hatching within days. It's very tame and affectionate; being her equivalent to a dog.
Alicia Ehnleit (アリシア・エンライト, Arishia Enraito)
Voiced by: Azumi Waki (drama CD, vomic, anime)[2][3]
The heroine of the game. She is fearful of Yumiella, due to her Light Magic making her perceive the latter as a dark smoke with glowing eyes. Alicia attempts to meet Yumiella half way in order to befriend her, but the capture targets keep blocking her, even hindering Alicia from leveling up, leaving her weak.

Capture targets

Unlike the original Light Magic and the Hero, they are very stuck up and immediately flock to Alicia, thinking Yumelia was cheating on the level test (which is impossible), and even stupidly blabbing the state secret about the Demon Lord's revival to the public.

Edwin Valschein (エドウィン・バルシャイン, Edōwin Barushain)
Voiced by: Taku Yashiro (drama CD, vomic, anime)[2][3]
The second prince of the kingdom, he is a magic swordsman. At the start, he attempts to get Yumiella expelled for the issue of believing her to be level 99, missing her curbstomping the other two in practice. Once she demonstrated her ultimate black hole spell, he gave up. Unlike the others, he eventually sees that mistreating and distrusting Yumiella is foolish, though it was too late for the others.
Oswald Grimsarde (オズワルド・グリムザード, Ozuwarudo Gurimuzādo)
Voiced by: Kōhei Amasaki (vomic, anime)[2][3]
A magic prodigy, or at least he was supposed to be. Yumiella gave him an inferiority complex by destroying a target dummy Oswald could only put a dent in.
William Ares (ウィリアム・アレス, Wiriamu Aresu)
Voiced by: Haruki Ishiya (vomic, anime)[2][3]
He constantly challenged Yumiella to fights despite being outclassed. He even concluded she was the Demon Lord at first, thinking she would commit wicked deeds in the future, despite the fact he heard the Demon Lord would revive (as in come back from the dead).

Written by Satori Tanabata, the series began serialization as a web novel on the user-generated novel publishing website Shōsetsuka ni Narō on June 15, 2018. It was later acquired by Fujimi Shobo, which began publishing it as a light novel with illustrations by Tea under their Kadokawa Books imprint on May 10, 2019. It has been collected in five volumes as of June 2022. The series is licensed in English by J-Novel Club.[4]

Manga

A manga adaptation illustrated by Nokomi began serialization in Enterbrain's B's Log Comic magazine on February 5, 2020.[10] It has been collected in three volumes as of February 2023. The manga series is licensed in English by One Peace Books.

Anime

An anime television series adaptation was announced on March 24, 2023.[16][17] It is produced by Jumondou and directed by Minoru Yamaoka, with scripts written by Fumihiko Shimo, character designs handled by Hitomi Kaiho and Lo Ho Kim, and music composed by Kana Utatane. The series is set to premiere in January 2024.[3]
