Plot

In the future, the company "Wifelike" creates expensive artificial replicas of dead women for their widowers. The companions are subservient to their respective owners while gradually developing consciousness. S.C.A.I.R., a group of activists, seek to destroy the company for their AI exploitation, seeing the companions as contemporary slaves. A branch of their group is committing terrorist acts to accomplish their mission, these supposedly involve stealing the robots from their wealthy owners, reprogramming them and using them to perform various kinds of crimes, including bombing buildings. The police are unable to locate their mysterious leader, nicknamed "the Ringmaster".

Officer William Bradwell works in finding stolen robots and returning them home. He orders one made to resemble Meredith, a woman of his past. Once activated, the companion starts learning about Meredith to become more like her. According to William, Meredith used to be a S.C.A.I.R activist, until she fell in love with him, and they got married. This is not the first time that William has been through this process with a Meredith replica, as previous iterations of her have already been stolen by S.C.A.I.R. and recovered by him. He wipes her memory every time he recovers her to be sure she does not remain hacked by S.C.A.I.R.

While becoming more like Meredith, William's companion starts dreaming about a masked man who claims to know her from before her last memory wipe. She also starts receiving visits from Louise, a member of S.C.A.I.R. who seems to have talked to the companion's previous iterations.

Meanwhile, William discovers that some of the companions have joined S.C.A.I.R. on their own accord to escape their male owners. One of them kills herself after William finds her, not wanting to lose her memory and return to the role of a subservient wife.

After learning of his companions' dreams, William convinces officer Jack Doerksen to help him get into the robot's "dreamscape" and confront the masked man, who turns out to be the Ringleader. William attempts to kill the Ringleader, breaking a lot of laws in the process. After failing to murder the man and waking up in the real world, William leaves with his companion, refusing to explain to Jack why he was acting so out of line.

William takes his companion to Wifelike to have her memory wiped again, hoping this will sever her ties to the Ringleader. Before being submitted to the amnesia-inducing procedure, the companion talks to other robots there. Most of them seem to be members of S.C.A.I.R. and recognize her as one of their own. They tell her she has hidden certain memories in her hard-drive and can access them even after they reboot her. She has been maintaining her role as William's companion because she is hoping to find something out. Her memory is wiped again. After being rebooted, the robot pretends to have no knowledge of her previous lives.

Jack's house is visited by Louise, who delivers digital proof that the man who they have identified as the Ringleader, Keene Morrison, has been dead for a long time and only exists in the hard-drive of William's companion. Jack confronts William with this information. William admits that he killed Keene, who was Meredith's actual boyfriend. Then, William, who was attracted to Meredith, forced her to be his girlfriend under the threat of violence. Their abusive relationship ended with William killing her and putting a ring on her dead body before reporting her death, pretending to have been her secret husband.

Having been caught, William kills Jack. The companion, who has been listening on their conversation, now has recorded confirmation that William killed Keene, a man who was going to propose to Meredith before the night of his death. The robot murders William and returns to her S.C.A.I.R. base, where she meets with other companions. She is the actual Ringmaster, and with her group, she decides to take the next step into the robot revolution.

Meanwhile, to fight back against the upcoming rebellion, Wifelike creates a replica of William.
