He was also Colonel of 33rd (The Duke of Wellington's) Regiment from 1863 until its merger in 1881 with the 76th Regiment of Foot to form the Duke of Wellington's (West Riding Regiment), after which he was colonel of the 1st Battalion of the new regiment until his death in 1895.[5] He was promoted Lieutenant-General in 1865[6] and full general on 29 May 1873.[7]

In retirement he patented a navigable balloon.[8]
