Wu Hung (historian)

Wu Hung (born 1945, Sichuan, China) is an American art critic of Chinese origin, a historian of Chinese art, the founder of its modern history; PhD (1987), Distinguished Service Professor at the University of Chicago, Fellow of the American Philosophical Society (2012) and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences (2007). In 1991 he was awarded Joseph Levenson Book Prize.[1][2][3]

He received his master's degree from the Central Academy of Fine Arts (CAFA) in Beijing. He received his Ph.D. in art history and anthropology in 1987 from Harvard; will also receive an honorary degree from there. Currently named (Harrie A. Vanderstappen Distinguished Service Professor) Distinguished Service Professor of Chinese Art History at the University of Chicago. Reader of the 68th annual AW Mellon lectures (2019).

In 2002, he founded and served as the director of the East Asian Art Research Center of the University of Chicago. In the same year, he also served as the consultant curator of the Smart Museum of Art.[4]

Received the Faculty Award for Excellence in Graduate Teaching from the University of Chicago (2007) and the Distinguished Teaching Award from the College Art Association (2008), and the most recent Distinguished Scholar award in 2018.[5]

Field of study

Wu Hung's research spans both traditional Chinese art and contemporary art. He tries to integrate the separate stages of traditional and modern/contemporary Chinese art into a new narrative of art history in different ways. Some of his ongoing projects are also exploring in this direction.[6]
