Early life
Young Mazino was born in Maryland as Christopher Young Kim. He grew up in Silver Spring, Maryland, raised by two Korean immigrant parents.[1][2] He has two older sisters. His father immigrated to the United States from Korea at the age of 16.[3] He is also a classically trained musician, who grew up with an interest in acting and participating in film and theater productions throughout his childhood and into college.[1] Mazino has a first-degree black belt in taekwondo.[4]
He attended the University of Maryland, but dropped out and moved to New York City in 2014 to attend the Stella Adler Studio of Acting, where he trained for a year.[5]
Mazino worked as Surf Rescue Technician in Ocean City, Maryland and as a Business Intelligence Analyst for Fresh Beauty, a cosmetics company before becoming a full-time actor.[6]
Career
Young Mazino's first appearance was in 2013 in the movie short Digging written and directed by Alvin Adadevoh. In 2018, Young made it to final callbacks in the ABC Showcase. In 2019, he made final callbacks for the Yale School of Drama acting program.[7]
He performed live theater in New York, including playing the role of Liuetenant Saito in the off-Broadway production of Comfort Woman in 2017.[8]
Mazino changed his name when he joined the Screen Actors Guild in 2018, because there were too many people with his legal name. While Mazino is not a Korean name, it originates from a Korean artist named Slave in Utero (born Lee Jong-hui) who created a manhwa called Tower of God.[9]
He played roles in several short films and television shows before being cast in a break out role as Steven Yeun's younger brother, Paul, in the hit Netflix series Beef, for which he was nominated for the Primetime Emmy for Outstanding Supporting Actor In A Limited Or Anthology Series Or Movie.
