Health and Social Care Select Committee

The Health and Social Care Select Committee (abbreviated to HSC, HSCC and HSCSC) is a Departmental Select Committee of the British House of Commons, the lower house of the United Kingdom Parliament. Its remit is to examine the policy, administration and expenditure of the Department of Health and Social Care (DHSC) and its associated agencies and public bodies.[1][2] The Clerks of the Committee are Previn Desai and Joanna Dodd.[3]

Inquiries

The Committee regularly initiates inquiries into government and the policies of DHSC's agencies and public bodies, such as NHS England.[4] The Committees' power to hold an inquiry is a core function of a Departmental Select Committee.

Vacancy of Chair of the Committee

On Monday 17 October 2022, Speaker Hoyle announced that Jeremy Hunt resigned as Chair of the Select Committee following his appointment as Chancellor of the Exchequer in the week preceding.[5] Upon the vacancy arising, the Speaker set out a timetable for the election of the Committee's Chair:[6]

  • Nominations are currently open until at 12:00 on Tuesday 1 November
  • If the position is uncontested, the Speaker may announce the result on the day nominations close
  • If the position is contested, MPs will be balloted the following day, on Wednesday 2 November

In accordance with the Order of the House of 16 January 2020, only a Member of the Conservative Party may be a candidate for the Chair of the Health and Social Care Committee.[6]
