William W. Howells

Biographie

Petit-fils de l’écrivain William Dean Howells, William Howells naquit en 1908 de l’union de l’architecte John Mead Howells et de son épouse Abby née MacDougall White[1]. Après avoir obtenu un baccalauréat universitaire en sciences en 1930, puis une thèse en 1934 à Harvard, il travailla au Muséum américain d’histoire naturelle[2]. Il enseigna aussi l’anthropologie de 1937 à 1954 à l’Université du Wisconsin, puis à Harvard jusque sa retraite, en 1974.

Pendant la seconde guerre mondiale, William Howells servit en tant que lieutenant de l’Office of Naval Intelligence[3].

En 1951, Howells fut président de l’American Anthropological Association[4]. En 1998, avec son épouse Muriel Seabury, Howells dota la direction du Peabody Museum de l'Archéologie et de l'Ethnologie à l'université de Harvard[5].

Membre de la Académie Nationale des Sciences, Howells a reçu plusieurs prix : la Viking Fund Medal en 1954, le Distinguished Service Award de l’American Anthropological Association, en 1978, qui l’honora à nouveau en 1993 en créant le William W. Howells Book Prize. L’année précédente, en 1992, Howells remporta le Charles Darwin Lifetime Achievement Award de l'American Association of Physical Anthropologists[6]^,[5]^,[7].
