Etymology

From Ancient Greek Αἰθιοπία (Aithiopía), from Αἰθίοψ (Aithíops, an Ethiopian), traditionally said to mean "one with a charred complexion", from αἴθω (aíthō, I burn) + ὤψ (ṓps, eye, face, complexion), but this is formally difficult and seems like a folk etymology.
