From earlier *äitei (compare Southern Ostrobothnian äitee, äiree), from Proto-Germanic *aiþį̄ (compare Gothic 𐌰𐌹𐌸𐌴𐌹 (aiþei)). Has replaced inherited emä. Cognate with Estonian eit and Võro äide, äidi, ääde.
