From Old Norse ófreskja, from the adjective ófreskr (clairvoyant), of uncertain origin, perhaps from Proto-Germanic *unfriþiskaz (as per S. Bugge 1885), but according to F. Holthausen cognate with Gothic 𐍆𐍂𐌰𐌸𐌹 (fraþi), then from *fraþiskaz.
