From earlier ayla, from Old Turkic [script needed] (anlayu), from Old Turkic 𐰉𐰆 (an, “she, he, it, that”) + 𐰞𐰖𐰆 (-lAyU) (similative suffix). Compare Turkish o (“she, he, it, that”), from a merger of earlier an and ol. Compare böyle (“like this”), şöyle (“like that”).
