Ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *ǵénu-, *ǵénus. Compare the roots *ǵ(o)nH₂dhos, *ǵnH₂dh-, Ancient Greek γνάθος (gnáthos). Compare also Latvian zods (“chin”), Old Prussian żauna (“jaw”).
