From Ποντικόν (Pontikón, of Pontus), from Πόντος (Póntos, Pontus, a region on the southeastern shores of the Black Sea), + κάρυον (káruon, nut). The name is referring to the fruit’s indigenousness and abundance in Pontus. Compare Latin nux Pontica (hazelnut).
