θρῆνος
See also: θρήνος
Ancient Greek
Etymology
Compare Sanskrit ध्रणति (dhráṇati, “to sound”), Latin drēnsō, and Old English drān (English drone). It is difficult to say whether the relationship is coincidentally onomatopoeic or genetic. Could also be from θρέομαι (thréomai, “I cry aloud, shriek”). Beekes argues for a Pre-Greek origin.
