μάρτυς
Ancient Greek
Etymology
Often assigned to Proto-Indo-European *(s)mer- (“to fall into thinking, remember, care for”)[1][2], which is acknowledged by Beekes, but he finds it unconvincing and instead derives it from Pre-Greek.[3]
