From Ancient Greek ὀμίχλη (omíkhlē), from Proto-Indo-European *h₃migʰleh₂ (“mist, cloud”). Compare Albanian mjegull, Polish mgła, Latvian and Lithuanian migla (“fog”). Compare also Armenian մեգ (meg), Persian میغ (meġ, “cloud, fog”), Sanskrit मेघ (meghá) from a related root.
