Usually derived from Proto-Indo-European *(s)kel- (“to curve, bend”), like σκέλος (skélos, “leg”) and σκολιός (skoliós, “bent, crooked”). The suffix "-ηκ-" is also found in σφήξ (sphḗx, “wasp”) and μύρμηξ (múrmēx, “ant”).
