From Proto-Indo-European *gʰelu-, *gʰelew- ,*gʰelōw- (tortoise). Related to χέλυς (khélus, tortoise). Compare to Proto-Slavic *žьlvъ, whence Old Church Slavonic желу (žely, turtle), Polish żółw (tortoise).
